Wits DASO will be hosting a car wash fundraising event for WCCO on March 11, 2017
Wits DASO, the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation, will be hosting a car wash in aid of the more than 600 students who depend on the food bank run by the Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach programme (WCCO), for a daily hot meal.
“Hunger on campus is an undocumented problem unlike #feesmustfall or exclusions. However, it does contribute to drop-outs and poor academic performance hence this initiative,” said Yanga Damane, DASO chairperson.
DASO members, together with various members of the Wits community, will be washing cars at R200 for staff members and R80 for students. People who are not car owners can also donate or volunteer some of their time to wash cars.
Damane said that they have invited everyone from management, political parties, clubs & societies, and students from all walks of life to come together and raise money for WCCO which will then assist students. “We will be doing this by putting aside our political or any other differences and focus on making as much money as possible,” Damane added.
Sizakele Boom, 3rd year BA Philosophy student is skeptical about the reasons for the car wash, “It is really nice of the so called ‘DASO’ to be doing this for WCCO, but I just wonder if this is not a political campaign or their way of getting new supporters”.
Karuna Singh, WCCO senior programme officer said she is aware of the car wash and is “really happy.”
The car wash fundraiser will run from 10am to late at the Bozzoli parking lot.
